PAUSE Demand

What is this study about?

Electricity demand in India is rising quickly, and much of it is still powered by fossil fuels like coal. This can lead to increased pollution and put pressure on the electricity grid, potentially causing power outages. Although renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are expanding, they do not produce electricity consistently throughout the day.

To support a cleaner and more reliable electricity system, we are studying smarter ways to manage when electricity is used, especially during high-demand periods.

One simple solution?
Smart plugs and switches that can temporarily reduce or shift electricity use from certain appliances. This helps balance the grid and makes better use of available energy.

How does it work?

Participating households will install smart plugs or switches that connect to the internet. These devices allow you to:

  • Control selected appliances remotely
  • Allow temporary switch-offs during high-demand periods (only with your permission)
  • Override the switch-offs at any time if you prefer the appliance to stay on

The pilot, called PAUSE Demand, is being conducted by Pow-dr with support from TATA Power Mumbai and is being evaluated by J-PAL South Asia.

Why are we doing this study?

We want to understand whether smart energy technologies can help:

  • Improve electricity reliability
  • Support the use of cleaner energy
  • Reduce pressure on the grid during peak hours
  • Inform future energy policies in India

Your participation will help researchers and policymakers design better electricity systems for the future.

Why does this matter?

If programs like this work well:

  • Electricity providers may be able to better manage demand and reduce outages.
  • Cleaner energy sources could be used more effectively.
  • Communities could benefit from a more stable power supply.

What does this mean for you?

By joining the PAUSE Demand program, you can:

  • Stay in control - Decide which appliances participate and override settings anytime.
  • Support a cleaner future - Help enable greater use of renewable energy.
  • Contribute to important research - Your participation helps improve electricity systems for everyone.
  • Prepare for future energy programs - Learn about new approaches to managing household electricity use.
  • Be part of something bigger - Join a community of households helping India move toward a sustainable energy future.

What will happen to the results?

After the study ends:

  • Researchers will analyze the findings to understand the impact of smart energy tools.
  • Results may help inform future electricity programs and policies.
  • Insights will be shared with relevant stakeholders to support better energy planning.

If you are a program participant, please refer to the manual included with your smart switch for setup instructions.
