The carbon intensity of UK electricity generation has dramatically reduced in recent years primarily due to an ever larger share of renewable energy generation. A side effect of this is that carbon intensity is more variable within short periods of time.

Here is the latest summary of POWBAL experiments in student halls. We show how students could reduce the carbon content of their energy consumption by 10% or more without changing your behaviour.

Fridges are a powerful free power source. How so? The average fridge freezer in the UK uses 408kWh of electricity per year.1 This average masks the way that a fridge turns on and off at different times of the day to maintain the temperature inside, and the fact that the moments it is consuming electricity can be shifted slightly without much of an impact on the household.
